Portable Diesel Generator Function Explained!

The thought of purchasing a portable diesel generator was scary initially, but then when it was explained to us how much better they were it didn't seem like a bad idea at all. We thought that the diesel generator was something that only farmers owned with their diesel trucks and tractors, and that it would be far too complicated, much too big and horribly dirty as well as smelly. Boy, were we wrong, on all counts.

It seems that the portable diesel generator is in fact a much simpler unit in design and construction, than its gas counterpart. Not only this, but there are no tune-ups to be bothered with, no carburettor that is forever needing adjustment, no distributor or magneto to give you trouble, and no spark plugs that get dirty and need to be replaced. There is maintenance though, but it is very simple - changing the oil and every so often the air, oil and fuel filters. But it gets better. The average portable diesel generator runs anywhere upwards of 20,000 hours before it is going to require any attention other than its normal maintenance. Many of these generators will reach 50,000 hours and more before they require attention. It is hard to imagine why there is any need for gasoline powered generators at all.

But of course there is, and they are much better suited to certain applications than the portable diesel generator. For the small home handyman who wants to run the occasional power tools and even the tradesman who needs a portable generator on the jobsite, he will find that the diesel generator is not best suited to his needs. The one thing that diesel dislikes most, and which will eventually shorten its life is to be switched on for short periods of time. The portable diesel generator is designed to be used, and that means running for substantial periods of time, and working during that time. Even so, many models are ideal for recreational use particularly in boon docking situations.

We are now shopping for a portable diesel generator to use as a stand-by in case of power outage. We have freezing cold winters and they seem to be getting more severe. It is not unusual for us to lose power for short periods of time or even a day or so, but it is getting harder to manage for these longer periods. A portable diesel generator will work well for us during these times because we have enough work for it to do. We have yet to work out the correct size we need, but first we have to calculate our power requirements for the house.

The cost of a portable diesel generator is of course a big consideration for many people, and us as well. But when you weigh it all up the initial extra expense is worth it. Diesel is dependable, and we now know that within a couple of years it will have more than paid for itself. After my initial fears, I'm really very comfortable with out decision to go diesel and am enjoying the shopping experience looking and evaluating the different makes and models.
